5. Oliver Zaugg takes his first win in the ‘season-closing’ Giro Di Lombardia (10th - 16th October)
Known as the ‘Race of the Falling Leaves’, the Giro Di Lombardia will lose some of its Autumn sheen next year with it being moved forward to the end of September. It is a blow to the tradition of the sport, but the race in its usual date got a fitting farewell in the October sunlight last Sunday as Leopard Trek’s Swiss rider Oliver Zaugg took what was his first professional win. To win one of the classics is a great achievement, for it to be your first win proper must have been even more special. It was a fitting end to the cycling year and for Leopard Trek’s only season before they join up with RadioShack for 2012.
